Red Star Film Night
In collaboration with Dave Rushton from the Broadcasting Trust, Aurora presented an evening of archive films from two different sources.
Lothian War Plan, about local nuclear emergency planning, and Deadmen Echo, on the Moscow inspired workers' film movement of the ‘30s, were made by Leith-based community film-makers Red Star between 1979 and 1982. They championed community film-making, and produced short labour and trades union oriented films. The films were originally screened at the Netherbow in Edinburgh together with hired feature length films on political and social issues.
Also shown were a series of amateur films made by late Edinburgh Cine Society member Jim Frame. He was a Friend of the Soviet Union and made films of his trips there between 1975-85. These charming and insightful documentaries include a Burns Supper conducted in Moscow and a documentary on Edinburgh to be shown in the Soviet Union. The films were kindly loaned by Jim Frame's nephew; Keith Farquhar.
